Abu Dhabi airport walkway provides power through footsteps

Goal

Optimize energy costs

Project

Abu Dhabi International Airport has launched an interactive walkway, in the passages between terminals, that stores energy and data about the movements of passengers.
The technology is based on the conversion of kinetic energy into electricity. The flooring consists of electromagnetic generators located on connecting triangles between airport terminals. The pressure on the platforms generates electricity, which illuminates the passageways between the terminals. Along the crosswalks are screens that can display advertisements and data on the electricity generated. Airport signage can also be powered by smart flooring.
The airport serves about 2 million passengers a month, and every day the crosswalks are recorded and converted into electrical power by the steps of approximately 8,000 travelers daily
