Monitoring the occupancy of recycling bins

Description:

In December 2021, technology service provider Telefonica Tech and nonprofit environmental organization Ecoembes launched a recycling project in San Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

The project partners placed 16 smart trash garbage cans. They are equipped with special rings that recognize the barcode on the packaging and identify the type of waste.

The rings’ sensors collect data and connect to the 5G Narrow Band network provided by Telefonica Tech. The platform tracks how full the containers are, the type of waste that has been discarded, and how often and when the containers are used.

In addition, the solution aims to reward citizens for recycling. Users of a special web application receive points (tokens), which can then be donated to social projects. The process is certified with blockchain technology.
